Description
The NES game Ice Climber was released in 1985. It featured Popo and Nana, a pair of mountaineers in parkas climbing to the top of various mountains to collect vegetables and reach a large condor at the top. Popo was the guy in blue controlled by player one, Nana in pink was player 2. They later appeared together as the Ice Climbers in Super Smash Bros. Melee on the Gamecube. This costume is based on the design used in Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii. In both Smash games they were voiced by Sanae Koyayashi, who was also Allen Walker (D. Gray Man) and a quite a few other roles.

This costume is made mostly out of polar fleece and fake fur. Almost 3 metres of fleece was used to make the parka and trousers. The parka was made using a pattern I managed to find on Ebay and trousers were made using a cheap pair that were taken apart to make the pattern. The hammer was made using two blocks of polystyrene and a wooden handle which were primed with watered down PVA before being painted with acrylic paint. Leatherette was used to make the mittens. A pattern for them actually came with the one for the parka. By a happy accident, they ended up being left and right.

The footwear were a pair of white trainers with covers made from sweadette with leatherette used for soles and a pair of stick on soles stuck on. Leatherette was not a good fabric to use for them. It wore away on the first because it was too thin.

On the parka, a couple of strips of fleece were put around the hood. On the character design it looked like hood was a separate part worn over the top of the parka. Unfortunately, because of time and technical constaints that wasn't possible. On the back it was sewn directly, the front part is attached by velcro. It had to be done that way as the parka is done up with a zip.
