|Toph is the awesomest character from this show. Therefore, a cosplay must be done. There was no doubt in my mind from the first moment she appeared.|
A very comfy and fun cosplay! Very popular, too: I have never received so many hugs in any costume. Possibly put together. Also, cosplays with pants are just the best. THE BEST.
Top & Trousers - Made of cushy green stretch knit. The top was cobbled together from a kimono pattern and a shirt pattern with fluttery sleeves. It ties with green ribbon to keep the kimono closed.
The trousers are made from a gaucho pants pattern, but the fabric was a bit stretchier than the pattern allowed for, so I will probably add a drawstring or waistband elastic to keep them from sagging before wearing Toph again.
Surcoat - The fabric I used was a pale yellow flannel-backed twill, which is soooo soft. I basically drafted the pattern for this myself, and it was a bit of a nailbiter. It took some trail and error, but it turned out alright in the end. The inside is lined, mostly self-lining. The clasp on the bodice is a strong magnetic clasp, spraypainted bronze. Even through 4 layers of interfaced fabric, it still clamps with it's mate sewn secretly on the inside.
The front panel does have a tendency to drift off to the side, though, so I have to tug it back into place when people ask for photos.
Shoes - NONE. HAH. But really, I wear a pair of tan flip flops when walking around con, and kick 'em off for photos. It might not be accurate, but I have this thing about walking into public restrooms barefoot...
Belt/Bracers - Made of synthetic brown leather. Tough to sew, but looks great. The green fabric is the same as the top and pants. They all close with strips of sew-on Velcro in the back. The yellow edges are made of bias tape, folded over and stuffed. The studs on the belt were half-ball cover buttons, stripped of their shanks, spraypainted bronze, and then glued down.
Wig - Most crazy wig work I've ever done! I was nervous to start, but I followed a great tutorial by RavenHedgehog on DeviantArt (who is a fantabulous cosplayer on here as well, under the name makeshiftwings). http://tomecko.deviantart.com/favourites/11226648#/d2z3g24
Basically, it's a hand-carved foam headpiece, wrapped in loose extensions and sewn onto a short, shaggy-banged wig.
The bangs are very hard to see though, I often had to hold them out of the way to watch presentations or see where I was going.
Makeup/Accessories - Other than painting my brows black, not much makeup is needed for Toph. I just used mascara and some foundation.
For her headband (which I keep calling a tiara in my head), I used two layers of craft foam, solidified with a few coats of watered-down Elmer's Glue, then sewed on the biggest pompoms I could find. It stays on with a strip of black elastic to hold it around the wig.
