Costume Information

Adamoluna got me interested in the Ghost Armour and weapons with her Kerrigan cosplay in progress. Nova is another character from the SC stroylines - their armour has cloaking ability and they are trained for specialist covert missions. The body armour has distinctive neon blue cables and emitter panels.
Nova has blonde hair.
Weapon C-20A Canister Rifle.

This will be my first bash at an armour costume, so I am going to read up on construction/materials etc and also experiment with stuff to get the look I want. I think I know enough electronics to make the neon blue light up parts work. Also really looking forward to making the Cannister Rifle - it looks so badass. ^^

So first of all..research, pictures, screen grabs, plans...

Update Sept 2011: Aaaarrrggghh home probs reconstructing bathroom!..I dont think this is gonna be possible now for London Expo Oct 2011. So unfortunately gonna have to postpone Nova until I have more time to spend again. :(

Great choice! Nova's one of my favourites. ^__^ Can't wait for this despite it being a long distance plan.

She is kick ass. But thats the job. I can still see her feminine side. She is the kind you are ok with if she likes you. The macho type grunts she meets recieve equal amounts of disdain back. I think she gives what she gets. If youre nice to her youll be ok. But you have to be sincere with it..cuz she has a psi index of 10 ..she can read minds. Now thats scary! :P

angel aiko - thank you sweetie ^_^ Im looking forward to this too..Ive wanted to try hard armour for a while.
Im not sure my legs will look so amazing cuz the boots are flat and practical. Heels give lovely extension to legs, and add glamour. But I will be keeping to the artwork with this. So I will try to make my cosplay appear more feminine in other ways - I have a few ideas in mind. ^_^

Finding the right fabric texture and colour for the bodysuit has been really difficult. Nothing looks bang on to what we need. I might end up airbrushing onto something.

rOcket - Thanks for the vote of confidence. :) Not much to show yet..I'm at the research and planning stage - going through lots of screen caps. I have got some prelim sketches done, so getting to grips with visualising how this looks all around and filling in details. When I get back from holiday I will start putting stuff together.

Ooh I love that stage, figuring it all out is so much fun! Then you get to making it and guuuh stress.

I like the look of the leg armour so far! keeping joints flexible without sacrificing accuracy is always a challenge.

Adamoluna - Joints, yes it is trickey. Movement is ok now that I figured where to pivot the front foot piece so it swings right over in front of the toe cap at full extent, which surprisingly it needs to do if you crouch down on one knee! ..Im sure this is why there is also a sizeable gap left between the boot and the foot armour piece. The armour seems to be designed with some thought given to practicality.. Good job.

Keeping the ankles narrow is the next sticking point. I had hoped to not cut down my boots. I will have to see what the leg armour looks like built around them. If it looks too chunky at the ankles I may have to chop my boots down. Ideally I guess shoes with a thick tread would have been better. So if you havent sourced your footwear yet this is something to watch out for.

Unfortunately my home bathroom refit has thrown up some unforseen (structural)problems and I feel like I am going backwards atm. :( So progress on my costume isnt going nearly as fast as I like!

I have an appreciation for Armor based cosplays as they arent the easiest things to make. I cant wait to see how this comes out and wish you the best of luck, though im sure you wont need as you'll do it justice :)

Thanks for your vote of confidence. :) It is my first armour costume so I wont say it is plain sailing. I'm really looking forward to doing it thogh and I have a special skit planned with Adamoluna as Kerrigan. Not sure when it is gonna happen though we both need to be in sync.. but hopefully one of the London Expos this year. :)

Leg armour - start (Posted 29th August 2011)

Dont ask me why..I decided to make my start by tackling the leg armour first. This has been pretty difficult to work out - (my first attempt at making armour) and also because the armour parts have to actually pivot and move around my foot movement. I need full manouverablity so eg I can crouch on one knee in the sniping position. ..After HOURS of cutting shapes out of cardboard and paper I think I have finally got the basics of my pattern down. So this is my rough working cardboard version of how my armour pieces will go together around boots. The toe section can pivot forward when the foot bends because of two crude wire hinges.
So next up is to translate this cardboard model into the finished costume version.

Bodysuit design sketch (Posted 12th August 2011)

This is my best guess at the bodysuit underneath the hard armour, and what I will be using to make my bodysuit, although as mentioned mine will be made in two pieces for the practical reasons. It has been difficult to nail down the design as there are differences between Nova and Kerrigans in game pics, ref art and the promotional life size statue.

Costume parts breakdown (Posted 2nd August 2011)

One piece catsuits are not the easiest things to get in and out of and especially with all the hard armour parts which will go on top of this, so following Adamolunas idea I think I will also go for a split at the waist. The lower half being like leggins and the top half being like a leotard with fastenings in the crotch.
This is how I envision my costume parts breakdown..

Bodysuit (Posted 2nd August 2011)

I did some photoshop on Nova - removing the hard armour and filling in the gaps to try and come up with the body suit design underneath. Looking at the cinematic of Kerrigan too - this is how I think the bodysuit looks, although there are slight differences between Nova and Kerris costumes..also slight differences between in game design and life size Nova promo statue. Well this is how I think it looks and is what I will be using as my pattern.

foam padding (Posted 17th July 2011)

No expense spared :P This is a cheap source of foam padding. 70p buys a pack of sponge foam 7x7 inch squares. It has just about the right stiffness/flexibility I am after. Planning to use this as a resource to pad out bits of the armour eg between glove armour layers, and between armour parts and my body to stop rubbing. Also the stand up collar of the body suit needs to have thickness but be able to flex, this will do the job nicely. Looks like it will glue edge to edge with contact adhesive to make larger shapes too. :)

Gloves start (Posted 17th July 2011)

These are my base gloves. They are industrial assembly Grip Gloves - the fabric enables skin to breath and remain comfortable, whilst the inside palm and fingers are rubberised for grip..good for holding onto my cannister rifle prop. These will form the base for my costume gloves. I will make the seperate hard armour pieces and glue them onto the gloves so gloves will look accurate to the ref and work practically too.

Boots (Posted 17th July 2011)

Boots Check! ^^
I have just bought myself some military style boots. I resisted the urge to glam up this cosplay with high heels etc, even though I have seen some sexy versions of Starcraft cosplay. I decided I wanted to stick to the original costume design..the down and dirty practical military no nonsense look. Footwear wise I think this will be the most comfortable costume I have worn. Which is great because I will be able to enjoy wearing it all day. :)

These boots will form the base, onto which the foot armour plates will fix and the boots themselves will be coloured to match the metallic silver leg armour.
