|Time Taken :||Around 12 hours|
|UPDATE 17/04: Planning to make 'the' poker chip, improve the cummberbund and buy some green contact lenses for a re-wear to Expo as Shinichiro Watanabe will be there! Also thinking of bringing my *toy* machine gun as she uses it at the beginning of the ep. to fend off Gordon's henchmen.|
The too good and too bad cowgirl...
I absolutely LOVE Cowboy Bebop. I religiously watched it on Anime TV back in 2007 after college everyday (I even heavily referenced it in some of my tedious BTEC coursework despite it being incorrect to do so haha)
I think Faye is an enigmatic and highly interesting character; in some ways I do see some of myself in her. As the 'ghostlighting' blog put it, Faye is "strong but emotionally vulnerable and unable to trust people but needs companionship more than she’d ever admit." Needless to say it's fun to be her for a day! Cowboy Bebop is probably my favourite anime, so it's an absolute pleasure to pay homage to the series and characters that I truly love.
I bought the jacket from my favourite vintage shop; it originates from the 80s (hence the power shoulders!). My mum modded it with black material, pink braiding, gold coins and gold cardboard. She also cut the widows peak into the mahoosive fringe and made a cumberbelt from an old jumper I picked up from my local charity shop for £1. I bought the leggings from M&S and rolled them up to where Faye wears them.
The wig is Cosplay.com's Dark Purple Hime Bob with Bangs. My mum trimmed the fringe for me, while I managed to buy the pink headband from Sports Direct (of all places!) for about 2 quid. It was on a stand seemingly dedicated to Lazy Town/Stephanie, and indeed the hairband used to have a little image of her ironed onto it, but my group and I managed to painstakingly rip it off.
I didn't have any poker chips unfortunately, but did have a variety of Queen of Hearts cards instead. While the shoes arn't mega accurate, I adore them, even if they did temporarily kill my feet after 8 hrs! Moreover, I couldn't find any cufflinks 'round my house other than egg ones (LOL) so I am on the look out for some dice/card designs as I know I will wear this costume again for sure.
I first wore this in tow with my Cowboy Bebop group at London Expo (28th-29th) and was so happy with the reception we got and amount of photographs taken. Thank you to everyone who took an interest, and also to the other 'Bebop cosplayers we ran into and subsequently conducted a super fun photoshoot with; you guys rock!
I wore it the second time 'round with some improvements (minus the nametag and heels though D:) at Hyper Japan Spring '12. I was pleasantly suprised at the amount of pictures I had taken and the compliments I received on both the costume choice and the cosplay itself. This is something that I don't think I'll ever retire as the reactions are always positive, I want to improve it further and it's always a joy to wear.

Gesso grief (Posted 8th May 2013)
Unless I was impatient, I put a little too much on the second coat [especially on the edges]so some of it has peeled :( I just want some rigid edges, tbh, then I can think about painting >.>
Paint it White (Posted 3rd May 2013)
used Humbrol Enamel in Matt White. So far so good but I didn't realise it stains your hands a little! Was a git to get off the brush too
Think it takes 6 hours (!?) to dry >_>
Moar chip progress (Posted 29th April 2013)
Sanded/filed down after being in the freezer for about 5 days. It's not perfect but I'm happy with it! Gesso next or straight into painting? Hmm...
Poker chip progress (Posted 23rd April 2013)
This is my second attempt and my first time working with clay. I want the sides to look rigid but don't know if this is important/how to do it. Really appreciate some feedback on this before I go any further.
UPDATE 25/04: Thinking of using gesso over what I've done to smooth over my derpiness and hopefully create the edge detail that I'm after
Poker chip research/planning (Posted 22nd April 2013)
After looking into the dimensions of regular poker chips and their weight, I now have a clearer understand of constructing the "key to the key".
I doubt measurements such as the diameter will be bang on as I want to give myself more space for painting the markings on. I would like the weight and thickness to be correct though
Cufflinks + more (Posted 21st February 2012)
The cufflinks arrived today, woo hoo! Really pleased how quickly they came as I was a bit concerned they wouldn't be here in time for HJ. It's difficult to tell until I've got my whole costume on, but I think I made the right choice and they're gonna go really well with everything (: I like that they're subtle but still look different to most cufflinks you see.
I spoke to my Spike briefly on Skype last night and he's coming to HJ! 8D
The wilds are calling me! You can’t keep me locked up! (Posted 16th February 2012)
Aw, poor Faye faye costume...she's been left for almost a year now. Seriously though, I've quite missed being her; and with Hyper Japan next weekend (thanx to my dad for spotting it being advertised on the underground), I should be there as Ms Valentine!
Hoping to have Spike back with me too, but he's super busy at the moment so is gonna let me know nearer the time. This time I will DEFINITELY bring Ein with me- I have to make my leaving the stupid dog behind at Expo last year up to him somehow, so I guess he can come.* Either way I'll definitely have a pretty strange cross-over going on; my mate is planning on coming as Black☆Star!
Just going through this [awesome] Tumblr http://fuckyeahcowboybebop.tumblr.com and thinking of cosplaying as Faye again makes me wanna re-watch 'Bebop; but I have soo much college work to do at the moment :( Sad tiems.
Actually really looking forward to it though (: Have emailed the HJ cosplay team asking if we can bring our BB guns [magazineless and battryless, naturally]. I hate being without a prop!
See you then, space cowboys xo
* I was just getting into character there, I actually love Ein and my Ein plushie to bits >D
