|Black Cat is full of cool costumes but Sephiria seems to get overlooked somehow. I've loved her costume since I first saw it - it really reminds me of Utena. It was an instant "I want to cosplay as her" thing for me, but I only recently got around to working on it. I found a wig that was perfect and a coat pattern that was perfect, and that made me go for it.|
The coat pattern used was Vogue V8346. Very few adjustments needed to be made, apart from adding the cuffs and remembering to make sure it crossed on the male side! The blouse, tie, trousers and shoes were items I already had.
I'm really, really pleased with how it came out. The coat turned out not to be as complicated as I'd feared it may be, and it's a really flattering fit - I'm keeping the pattern and making a coat for everyday wear using it! I love the colours too. A lot of it required hand-stitching though - through ten layers of fabric at one point - and my thumb and fingers hated me for about a week after it was all finished!
I think this is probably a first for me, insofar as it's a costume that I feel happy enough with to consider it finished - I can't really think of any other costumes I've done that I don't want to fix up or improve in some way! The cords have now all been stitched to the epaulettes, and the epaulettes carefully stitched to the shoulders of the coat. I also invested in some Kryolan Aquacolor theatrical face paint for the forehead symbol and it looks a hell of a lot better than the lipstick I used at Minamicon! I'm also delighted with the sword - I think it came out really well considering I'd never made a sword before. It was a big hit at London Expo, too - I had a group of kids admiring it, and an Urahara cosplayer complimented me on how "professional" it looked, which I really wasn't expecting at all! So in all, I'm really pleased with, and proud of, this costume.
