|I really wanted to make an iconic costume that was really recognisable. My little girl loves Totoro so I decided to have a go! |
He's built on a frame made of kids cheap hula hoops joined with nylon webbing. There is a harness built into the top hula hoop that goes over my shoulders. This was essential so that he would fold flat to fit into the car! He's then padded over the top with wadding and fur. The head was made from garden wire twisted to make a frame. The green garden wire I chose was FAR too soft and has prickly ends I would not recommend using this stuff, it also means he is easily squished and it makes the head far too delicate, lesson learned! For the mouth I used aida (for cross stitch) which worked well and I could see out and it let lots of fresh air in. He was really quite light and comfy to wear and didn't get that hot unless I stopped moving!
I didn't quite finish him before the con, he is missing the little grey v's on his chest! I plan on fixing this if I take him out again, which I hopefully will.
