- Doki Doki 2011
- Kitacon IV 2012
Outlaw Star is one of my faves when it comes to anime, and Melfina has always been my favourite character. Back when I first started cosplaying in 2006, she was already on my to-do list, but I never got round to it for various reasons.
For Doki Doki 2011, my sister and I had planned our costumes together, but she had to pull out two weeks before the event due to work commitments and so I decided to change my costume plans. I needed something easy to make, and after narrowing it down to two choices, Melfina won, as I already had everything I needed and just needed to put it together.
The skirt was the first thing I made for this costume, and it's made from black jersey fabric that Sisceal didn't need anymore and kindly gave to me. The shoes were some that I already owned, the tights were some that Crazedteensie had never opened and didn't plan to wear, and the shirt and tie were bought. The wig was borrowed from Crazedteensie, and I do want to replace it in the future if I ever wear this again, but if I had bought one for the costume's debut it wouldn't have turned up in time.
The anklet is made from an embroidery hoop! I had originally planned to make it from a foam ring, but couldn't find one big enough to fit over my ankle and heel so I went with an embroidery hoop instead. My boyfriend painted it yellow for me because I was still working on my poncho the day before the event.
The poncho is made from polycotton in two shades of blue, and the lining is also polycotton in a dark pink colour. Most of it is handsewn - I had to handsew all of the black edges, the bottom hem, the flap onto the main poncho and I also had to handsew the white circular things to it as well. It's very cosy!
All in all, I've enjoyed making this costume, and I'll also have some fellow characters in the future - my sister wants to cosplay Aisha and my friend wants to be Hilda, so I'm looking forward to that :)

Crunch time! (Posted 5th November 2011)
Alrighty, well as my sister can no longer make it to Doki Doki, we've decided to delay our Little Sister cosplays for now and I've chosen to do something different - and I've settled on Melfina! :)
All I've got left to do is the poncho and the anklet, both of which I'm pretty sure I can make in a week. I've cut my fabric out today and I'll be sewing it tonight, and I'll carry on working on it over the week. As for the anklet I have an idea of what to do...just need some yellow paint and a foam ring!
Shirt and tie (Posted 11th September 2011)
Today I went out and bought a couple of things for Melfina!
I hate making collars, so to save myself the trouble I bought a cheap white formal shirt from Asda. I don't plan to enter this costume in any masquerades or competitions or anything, and also, if I made the shirt from scratch, I'd probably end up spending more money on the fabric for it than I did just buying one.
I also bought a blue tie! :) My dad has tons of ties but doesn't seem to have a plain blue one in the right shade, so I bought one from Matalan. I then went to Asda afterwards (to buy the shirt) and they had plain blue ties there that I liked better than the one I'd just bought... D: But oh well! At least I have one now.
Poncho a go go (Posted 30th August 2011)
Today on a trip to the fabric story I found some polycotton in the right shades of blue and pink for Melfina's poncho, so I got three metres of each and bought some black ribbon for the edges as well. I also got three polystrene rings for the white circular...things on the front of the poncho, but I don't know how well they'll work out. Worth a try, though!
Skirt is finished! (Posted 31st July 2010)
I've just finished the skirt and braces; my sewing machine refused to co-operate so I had to sew the buttonhole by hand! But I'm happy with how it looks, and that's what matters :)
Progress (Posted 30th July 2010)
The skirt and braces are pretty much done - the only thing I'm missing to finish them off is a white button, and unfortunately the only one I have is one that's going to be used for one of my boyfriend's cosplays! Tomorrow I will raid the house and see if I can find another one instead. :)
