|Sanzo's always been one of my favourite character so I figured it was high time I cosplayed him!! ^^ It was the first costume I've ever made (including the first time I ever used a sewing machine) so I was pretty happy with the results!!|
The jumon was pretty simple to make, just a lot of sewing involved, the crown wasn't too hard either (I made it out of gold card and stuck material to it).
The rakusu was pretty simple to construct, we used a brown felt-like material (not sure exactly what it was) the hardest part was getting it to stay in place! tacked it to the sutra for the expo and used a chopstick to keep it stiff but really the chopstick was too long and the tacks pulled so I intend to make some alterations and turn it into a proper rakusu.
I read somewhere on the internet that the sutra Sanzo uses is similar to the 'Heart Sutra' so I looked it up and used that as the template for the scripture. I um'd and ahh'd about writing it in Kanji or Sandskrit and decided that Sandskrit actually looked better so used that in the end!!
For his gun, I found a blue pellet gun in a toy shop and painted it with model paints to make it accurate.
For his undergarments, I took a turtleneck shirt, dyed it black and cut the sleeves off. I then used the sleeve to make the bits that cover his arms!
