| This was my improved version of Crystal Siegfried for the Eurocosplay competition and Amecon. You can read about how the crystal armour was made in the original costume here: http://www.cosplayisland.co.uk/costume/view/10034 Here are the improvements I made to the costume: Under armour- The new under armour was made using PVC foam board. It's a good material but it can be very tricky to get right. I used the old armour as a pattern. There were a few adjustments made as the armour was going from soft foam to solid state. I included welding lines in the front of the amour to make it look more authentic. I could have made the front completely crisp and clean, but then it would have been like cartoon armour. Under suit- I made a new tunic to go under the armour in linen. This made it cool to wear and also gave me something to wear around the con while not in armour Chain mail- I attached the waist chain mail directly to the chest so it would fall properly. Sword- I redid the electronics inside the sword and added another fibreglass rod to strengthen it. Embroidery- I embroidered the bottom of the cape and the front of the tunic using the design on the front of the chest armour. | |

Painting and weathering finished! (Posted 7th August 2010) I'm finished with the painting now! I'm happy with the results and now the armour is ready to be bolted together with the crystal. |
|
Under armour built (Posted 3rd August 2010) Finished all the basic construction today. ONWARD TO PAINTING! |
|
Popper/Snaps Test (Posted 1st August 2010) To make this version look more like armour I'm using snaps/poppers instead of zips. This was my test piece to see if the fastening would be strong enough and how much of an allowance I would need to add to compensate for the bulk in between the plastic pieces. |
|
Arm Test (Posted 1st August 2010) Each bit of armour has to be tested to see if it will fit under the crystal armour before it can be painted. |
|
Finished cutting out all the under armour (Posted 1st August 2010) Here's the cut off bits and all the old bits of armour I used as a template for the new ones. Rest in pieces little dudes. |
|
Ready for heat moulding (Posted 1st August 2010) All these parts need to be heat moulded into shape. I may be putting this off slighty... |
|
Chest plate (Posted 1st August 2010) I started on the heat moulding today which involved the chest plate. I was going to resin cast the front plate but it wasn't completely flat so it wouldn't have worked. |
|
New armour paint test (Posted 29th July 2010) Not as shiny as I'd hoped and the weathering is a lot harder to do, but this is much better than the last armour |
|
Gloves (Posted 29th July 2010) Here's one of the new gloves riveted together. Now to make the other one! |
|
De-constructing the armour (Posted 26th July 2010) Took the two sets of armour apart today so I could work on the under armour. Here's what the crystal armour looks like without the under armour. |
|
Embroidery swirls (Posted 22nd July 2010) The swirls are made using thick Chinese silk thread which has been put in place using a technique called couching. |
|
Embroidery close up (Posted 15th June 2010) Here's a close up of the stitches. It's a long satin stitch and something called stem stitch for the edges. |

It is a great choice to use this one. ^_^
Good luck on this one hun, I really hope you get it <3
i would really love to see this in October since I never got to see the original last year, and I'm not going to be able to make it to Amecon. :( Excellent Choice though as I'm sure it will turn out even better than the awesome pictures I've seen of it!!
SUUUUUUPAAAAH SIEGFRIED!!!
beautifull embroidery work xx
Awesome. It already looked fantastic, so with your extra modifications I'm sure it'll be a winner. Good luck
Love it already :) Good luck with the rest
ace lol ive lost
Oh my gosh, could this costume have even more work invested in it!?
I really wish you good luck Tab, you really deserve a shot at Euro.
omg yay! 8D
Pictures with my Hilde, pretty please? Also, good luck with the eurocosplay qualifier! As Ranma said, you really do deserve to compete in the finals. I consider my own chances lost now, but seeing your Siegfried IRL is well worth it! :D
I'm really looking forward to seeing your Hilde Ada! I have a photoshoot at 13.30 on saturday in Siegfried- would you like to join in and make it a group thing?
-Tab
would love to! ^^ Just give me a location and I trust I'll be able to find my way there XD
I dont think Ive ever done a photoshoot with someone else before.. should be a fun experience! :3
Ooooo! Looking forward to seeing the new upgrade. I loved your Siegfred to began with and always thought it as epic. What is the new matrieal your using for the armour?
The gloves are the same stuff as the clear plastic (forget the name, it's a bunch of letters) and I think the thicker stuff is actually the same plastic you use.
-Tab
Ah the PETG plastic you mentioned a while back. Looks awesome. Defo want to have a play with it a some point. Cintra/foamex is my friend :D. Love it. What you've done looks awesome. Even more awesome than what you have done with Siegfred.
Just when I thought you couldn't get more epic you go and do just that. Nice one ;)
Thankies for answering XX
I say there's always room for improvement with everything you do! It's not about how good something is, but how you personally feel it could be improved. There's always *something* on a costume that I think I could have done better so next time I make something similar I'll try not to do it again.
I'm never going to be perfect, but I can always try be better than I was yesterday.

^This.^
I completely agree! You have to learn from your mistakes in order to advance, with anything really. I'm never completely satisfied with my stuff either but tbh that's a good thing, keeps you going and working harder to better yourself ^^
Also, progress is looking very shiney and purdy :D nice one~
your armour will look twice as good as is used to with a brighter coloured under-armour. It will be an improvement well worth the work, no doubt! Can't wait to take pictures with you, it's really fueling my work on Hilde now. ^^
I've hit a bit of a flum for the day now as heat moulding hasn't gone as well as it could. The main issue is that the glues I normally use either don't work or come undone when heat is applied. I have to heat things to glue them in place, but to heat them into shape I need to glue them...
I'll get past it, but it's really hitting into productivity!

Really loving reading your journal about this. The progress looks so interesting (and a lot of hard work!)
Can't wait to see the finished costume - it's going to be quite a challenge to wear, isn't it. XD
Oh my dear god this is amazing...woah! i really can't wait to see this finished.
Progress is ace dude <3
This is looking fantastic!
Considering the amount of costumes and props you pump out so quickly, the quality never suffers, this is mindblowing! Amazing work.
Really enjoyed reading the journal so far - keep going Tab!
Nicely put. I never am happy with my costumes. There is always something I can improve apon.

Has to be said, this is amazing! Mindblowingly awesome costume :) have to ask too, were some of those photos taken at Stourhead? I have a feeling I recognise those stoney walls :P
this was amazing to see in person, was really detailed great work =D
@ Jenivere- all the photos were taken in the middle of the road towards the Hall at Amecon 09. I rarely do location shoots unless it's at a convention and I happen to know a place nearby.
