|Time Taken :||I don't even know anymore....|
|This was for the Heroines of Ghibli group planned by MoonLily at Kita III!|
And I will wear this to the Saturday of May Expo 2011, to enter for Eurocosplay (I know I won't probably get through as there are tons of people more worthy, but I wanna try anyway for fun :D)
The gun and the hat were the most rage-worthy parts, the most fun part was probably the spats, I love dem spats |3
EDIT: I'm very happy with this costume, and although I want to leave it to rest for a bit I'd love to wear it again :) The only awkward bit was the gun! and carrying it around all day, oh and the fact everyone kept walking into my sword when it was in my sheath, and stuck out an awkward way baaaaaaaaaaaaah XD
The blue bits were a mixture of cotton drill (darker blue) and another type of cotton that was kinda fluffy (I forget the name - light blue).
I made the tunic from a dress pattern that I modified the neck line (although I made it too large thus I dislike the collar). I made it long to begin with and then I cut it shorter to be accurate. The collar I made from scratch, measuring around and cutting it out of interfacing as well to keep it standing up.
The flares were made from glitter tubes that foam was wrapped around and two circles of foam glued on top and bottom. They were then painted orange and red and I made the pockets that they are stored (I glued all of them to the tunic to keep them from falling out but kept one loose for the purpose of photos and IT FELL OFF AND I LOST IT AT EXPO *bawwwwws*)
The gloves I made from a pattern online, for my first non-stretchy gloves they worked alright!
The hat was a nightmare T___T I started by experimenting with a fleece hat pattern and making it bigger until it had a good shape, and the whole thing came over my face. Then , on my wig head with the wig on, I pinned and cut it into the shape it is supposed to be (but it still failed slightly, bah). I then made the two ear covers out of the material and wadding inside to make it poofy, and the two blue ridges I sewn the shape to indent the wadding to make it look 3D and then I painted them with blue acrylic. I joined the two covers with a bit of cotton and velcro. This bit kept falling apart all day and I had to constantly hot glue it DX The red bits, I cut out eye holes and then cut out bits of red filter plastic (the thing you use in stage lights) and stuck them on. This was tricky since hot glue melted the plastic a bit but it didn't stain to the other side of the hat.
The belt was made from a strip of khaki green cotton drill, and the buckle had a piece of craft foam painted gold over it, with bits of air dough stuck on. I made a little pouch and stuck that on and also attached the sword sheath.
The leggings were bought off Ebay. The boots I already had. The spats were made from the darker blue cotton and had a layer of wadding inside to make them poofy, and then I attached the four rectangle things onto the back (I have no idea what they were) and the strap underneath the boots. To keep them from falling down I velcrod them to the leggings although I had to keep applying double sided tape over the day to keep them sticking. Baah.
The sword was foam board in 3 parts to make it 3D and then masking tape was wrapped around it before paper mache. Then it was painted and varnished and the details were made from craft foam.
The gun (OH GOD) was also horrible. I started off with a foam tube from B&Q, and made the parts for it out of cardboard. I masking taped it all and paper mached. Then when it came to the instant paper mache layer I used a tiny bit of it at a different consistency and while it worked to a certain extent the horrible macheing still came through >___<. I then painted it all with matte white paint to begin with and then painted it silver and blue. The details were made from milliput, and the triangle thingies that attach the shoulder strap were made from wire hot glued together. I was worried about the strength but it seemed to hold out all day, yay! The biggest problem I had with the gun during the day was the paint cracking. What had happened was since the core was foam and therefore flexible, I needed to have made more paper mache layers to keep it strong, however this did not happen and thus it bended slightly and cracked in various places. If I EVER redo the gun, I will be using a PVC pipe for the core.

Progresssssssss (Posted 22nd May 2011)
I've been paper macheing the gun, almost dry :) then I have to make a big decision - try and make the paper clay work? (it gave me hell when doing the wrench) Get some gesso and use that to smooth it? Or keep it as it is (not really wanting to do that D:)?
Gloves finished, tunic 90% done! (Posted 9th March 2011)
I finished off the tunic, only need to buy some tubes, cover/paint them orange and then sew on the fabric cases on the tunic below the shoulders for the ammo thingies. Also need to hem the bottom but I'm unsure as to whether to keep it long or chop it a bit - Nausicaa's skirt is rather short but I'm a bit uneasy with baring all like that so I'll decide once the leggings have arrived and I can test out viewability of underwear :P
White leggings bought off ebay, also white shoes. The shoes and leggings looked like the same colour on all refs, and I just need to make spats out of the darker blue material.
The gloves are finished :D first time making non-stretchy gloves, hoo boy. I used a glove pattern I found on google along with a tutorial, but the tut was a bit pointless, a lot I figured out myself. Also got the tube bits at the bottom of the gloves with the "dots" made of out the same material as the tunic. It's annoying to verify exactly what the gloves look like as every ref is different :S
Next I'm currently making the belt, I've got a buckle that I'll be gluing craft foam to painted gold. Either that or make out of air dough, or have a mix. Then I'll make the little bag she has, the spats, and then decide on whether I'm making the sword and mask thing. I probably should since it'll be more accurate.
Gun (Posted 12th February 2011)
I bought a long foam pipe thing from B&Q the other day, and am using that as the base for Nausicaa's gun :D I've got some cardboard boxes that I gutted and have basically done a cardboard, foam pipe and duct tape job. I will paper mache it then paint it over. It's wonderfully lightweight so I'm happy!
I also got a better wig (the first one I got was too red T__T) and I've cut the fringe. I'll need to put some spray on it to seperate it a bit though.
Now I just need to start the blooming costume T__T
Sorta progress (Posted 4th September 2010)
So the beads I got for her earrings weren't big enough int he end, but I have found some PERFECT ones on ebay that I've been watching for a long time now, until I have the money for them as they are expensive (BUT IT'LL BE WORTH IT THEY ARE AMAZING)
In other news, my boyfriend neko_riddles at the August JAF recently, he bought me a Teto plushie TwT they had a stall with Studio Ghibli plushies and we both saw the Teto, and I didn't think he was gonna buy it but he crept away at some point and bought it 8D it's so cyoot. Gonna have so much funs with my Teto x3
other than that, no progress on Nausicaa until after Expo, and then I can focus on my 2011 cosplays!
