|Cost :||Around £40-50 I think|
|Awards :||London MCM Expo May 2011 - Best Performance (Sunday)|
|Time Taken :||About 3/4 days in total (on and off)|
|My boyfriend neko_riddles recently got me into Steam games, TF2 in particular :D|
Obviously I'll be doing a genderbent version, and I found this design that ChemicalAlia did a while ago, that looks sort of like me o__O except my hair is shorter now so I have a blonde wig that's plaited (I don't want long hair because that will lose the whole idea of a working girl you see)
To be debuted at May Expo 2011, with an interesting skit.....ohohoh.
EDIT: So I found this costume to be really comfortable! I was scared the seams would rip in places but wearing cycle shorts underneath reduced that and it worked really well :D A lot of people asked me and neko_riddles (my Spah) if he was a Red Spy in disguise or we were just dating (which was very wrong) to which I did reply the latter ROFL.
I was crapping myself in the masquerade queue, the skit idea we had was different and I had no idea how it would be received so I was pretty much more scared than I was on the Saturday as Nausicaa LMAO!!!
But it went better than expected, everything was timed perfectly (LIKE THAT WRENCH THANK GOD) and we ended up winning Best Performance O_______O which I was totally shocked about because I was rooting for other friends to win (Like the EPIC Clamp group!!!) but I was like ":O.....8DDDD" lmao.
Anyway, breakdown on how I made etc etc
The hard hat was from Ebay, the goggles were from amazon.com (I'd googled engineer goggles and someone had posted a review on these on amazon about them being perfect for an Engie cosplay - YOINK) at the end of the day I hardly wore the goggles except for photos and the rest of the time I had them around my neck. I didn't wear them onstage because I could barely see in them and did NOT want to fall offstage >_<
The overalls I made from brown cotton, I could have used cotton drill but the colour of the cotton was more accurate. I used a pattern that was rather confusing but I managed to figure it out and barely needed half of the pieces! It helped that it was a men's pattern. I used a mixture of straight and stretch stitches especially around the crotch area so it wouldn't be too much of a strain. I used buckles as the connector thingies and the flappy bits that stuck out I taped down with velcro.
The kneepads are crappily made from grey and yellow felt. Perhaps in the future I'll get ones that look accurate and yet work well :P to stop them from falling down I glued them to the overalls.
My shirt after many attempts of getting one accurate (I wanted one that was red and had 3/4 sleeves). I started with getting a white shirt that ended up not being dyable despite the listing saying pure cotton ¬__¬. I then bought a red shirt that looked accurate but when it arrived and I wore it it ended up not fitting around my chest despite being in my size >__<. So I then caved in and bought a red polo shirt, and the sleeves ended up being accurate! WIN. I then made the class patches crappily out of felt again XD;;
The belt was one I bought, not accurate in colour but I wanted a canvas belt rather than leather to attach things more easily. The pocket I made from brown pleather, and then I sewn it to the belt. It ended up being big and sturdy enough to carry my wrench YAY. The black box was made from a Yugioh deck box that I painted black to get rid of the writing. During the day there are some scuffles but I can easily paint over them again. The rope was a bit of rope I stole off of my Stiltzkin's bag of scrolls XD
The glove was part of a pair that my friend picklesofdoom gave me. For the grey bits I was planning to use felt but the hot glue mess would have been horrendous especially around the tips so I ended up painting it with acrylics and it survived the day!
The boots were Wellington boots that although were my size, didn't fit round my thigh; since I didn't have money to buy another pair, I simply cut the part of the boots that didn't fit and walla usuable wellies :D won't work as decent wellies anymore though herrrr |D
The pistol was a water pistol I had that was an accurate shape and size miraculously, and I painted it in the colours of the pistol and varnished it. I painted the end of it orange to reassure people it was fake.
Now, the WRENCH. One of the banes of my life XDDD I started off with foam board in layers, to create the 3D effect, and taped it all together with masking tape. Then I used paper mache, and then this is where it gets silly. I tried out a new method of instant paper mache, but the first time I did it I got the wrong consistency. It ended up being a bit heavy XD;;; and I started sanding before it had fully dryed so it was all lumpy and stuff, euthgghrgh. My friend and cosplay helpline Hatsune_Hawke told me of a paste made from flour, water and PVA that should help cover up the holes and be mopre smooth, but when it hardened it was impossible to sand D: so I ended up going out and buying filler, and then that sucked because it was horrible to use and then made the wrench look even more shite. After that I just said sod it and spray painted it but even then I had to paint it with gold acrylic on top! Then I varnished it and it was ok XD I got compliments for it but I'm not 100% happy with it. I reckon I used a crappy brand of paper mache (I will be purchasing actual paper CLAY next time!)

Progress (Posted 22nd May 2011)
I've finished the overalls, need to practise the skit in them though. I bought a belt which'll be easier than making one, and easier to attach stuff to it :D The wrench is finished (BANE OF MY LIFE) and now I just have the belt and the kneepads to make, hooray :D
Riiight (Posted 28th April 2011)
Gotta move that gear up! Once my uni work has been done, I'll quickly make this (will have to since the performance is going ahead!)
I've bought a yellow hat, and a white shirt that I'm going to dye red. Will make the patches out of yellow felt likely. Will make the dungarees and the belt. Fun times! 8D
As for the boots, I had some wellingtons I bought a while ago that don't fit me on the calf. Since I should use them for this, I cut off the tops so they fit me better now :D
Also got a pair of gloves coming from home so I can do one up in grey felt hopefully.
