|I've always really loved Mayuri, I think he is a really under-cosplayed character from the series and I just wanted to do him justice.|
To me I looked at all the captains and he struck me as the most fun to pull off. I always found it easier playing nasty than nice and he is such a delicious little sociopath.
The costume itself wasn't too difficult, my glorious cosplay partner constructed the uniform, I worked on that iconic hat. The original Midlands photos are taken with the paper mache hat, London pictures had a plastic coating which just felt more finished to me. It looked almost brain like.
With the issue of comfort, I just want to cry. This mother hurt! Instead of a wig cap I wore a swimming cap, in order to replicate his perfectly white, bald head. It looked great but it made my head hurt and cut into the tops of my ears, especially after a long day conventioning. As well as that the hat needed to be firmly wedged onto my head (further head aches, literally!)
I will always chose to use make up, over a mask, however when one lip is black and the other lip is white this can lead to issues in speech. So hilariously throughout every convention I could neither speak nor hear. Tricky.
I gave up on nail glues to attach his epically long nail, and simply painted many many layers of nail varnish and super-glued the whole thing on. It just peeled right off under a little hot water.
WORN AT: Midlands MCM Sept 2008 & London MCM Oct 2009.
Overall, being Mayuri was fun, people who recognise you tend to think it's cool that you are giving him a go. All the Nemus just fall at your feet. And occasionally you will meet a full blown Mayuri fangirl (very strange people, he's a deeply unpleasant man).
