|Okay, I really like Gyarados. So, with news of a Pokemon gijinka group being formed, why not have a go as my favourite Pokemon?|
I'm going to try my own design of Gyarados, with a headpiece creating the fins and a mask for the face, and a jacket with a tail to represent the body.
I was originally going to cosplay Gyarados at Amecon, but since the group on Sunday of Expo had fallen through, it gave me a good chance to debut the costume. Had a load of fun being noticed by Pokemon fans of all ages, and will be revamping the costume for Amecon!

Long time no report... (Posted 14th September 2010)
Should've updated this journal with the results of the finished costume at Amecon, but only just got round to it (OTL). Amecon was a blast, with Gyarados being my favorite costume by far (the fact the rest were repeated costumes didn't help). I was blamed for the rain during the Pokemon photoshoot, but I claimed it was the Kyogre plushies' fault!
Many highlights for Gyarados was one guy (Kuroi Ryu I think) throwing his Pokewalker at me from the balcony, the Pokemon tournament on Sunday, and of course the photoshoot, complete with "Rain Dance".
Speaking of Rain Dance, Over the times I have worn Gyarados, I have compiled a movelist for my Gyarados, as seen in the new picture. At Expo, I heard a lot of people mentioning the Lazor meme, so I shouted "I'MMA FIRIN' MAH HYPER BEAM!!! I'mma recharging mah Hyper Beam..."; I had a joke with some guys who wondered if I still had splash (indeed I do), and Amecon made me learn Rain Dance and Roar. The former is quite ironic, as I don't have a water attack, and Roar I added because I liked the original title of the picture: "Gyarados uses Roar. You fled."
If I don't get Medicham done in time for October Expo (which hasn't even been started, so it's very likely it's not done), I'll be Gyarados once more on the Saturday.
New pic! (Posted 1st August 2010)
Haven't got a picture of my back yet as I can't actually see what I'm doing... doh. For now I can show off the new headpiece, which as you can see is bigger than before, and sturdier.
All done - again... (Posted 28th July 2010)
Got the Gyarados updates finshed a few days ago, and I'm pretty impressed. Sadly no new photos yet - I should have them up by the weekend. However, the tail seemed too heavy with the new fabric, so it won't stay attached to the shirt. Luckily I can attach it to the jeans instead!
Pokefun at Expo (Posted 31st May 2010)
Sunday was a lot of fun for me at Expo, for the sheer number of Pokemon fans calling out "Gyarados! Awesome!" I got loads of pics taken of me, hopefully they'll be uploaded soon.
As for the costume, there's loads to improve. I'm going to evolve my cosplay skills from "cheap fabric and card" to "better fabric and craft foam". Let's just say I broke my tail after sitting down, and the headress just didn't want to stay on in the wind...
So yeah, along with Gyarados, I have plenty to do before Amecon, when I'll be wearing Gyarados again.
A couple of changes... (Posted 25th May 2010)
Redid the headband a couple of days ago, now it's just one sheet of card cut out with the white fabric attached, looks a lot better than a hairband taped up.
Also bought some blue hairspray, as it's going to add to the effect.
Done so far... (Posted 17th May 2010)
(Okay that was weird, I was in the middle of typing this post up and the page decided to close down on me. 2nd try now!)
Although I'm not 100% pleased, the costume is done for now. If I have time before Expo, I will remake the headband, but for now I have taped it back and pulled it forward to make kind of a tiara, and the tail looks tatty due to buying material that was too thin. Ah well, learn from your mistakes, eh?
Good progress so far... (Posted 16th May 2010)
So I made a marathon session of making the Gyarados costume today. I first of all made the headpiece, which hasn't turned out perfect so I might redo it.
The mask on the other hand has come out really well, even if I was a little eager to try it on and didn't wait for the glue to dry *cough cough* darn fumes... lol
The shirt is half done so far, I've got the yellow patches on either side done, and the fins down the back are underway but need re-stitching here and there. After work tomorrow, the next part begins - making the tail and attaching it together!
I'll also put up pictures tomorrow.
