|Time Taken :||1 week|
|It took me a second viewing to really 'get' this show, and I've loved it ever since, it is wrong and twisted but in a beautiful, beautiful way.|
Itoshiki-sensei is a fantastic character, completely delusional, mentally unbalanced and does no end of crazy stuff, but does it with *style*
I can't replicate this but heck, I wanted to give it a tribute at least.
The costume is a fairly standard kimono and hakama combination, with an odd 'grandad style' collarless shirt underneath. The shirt is a plain standard work shirt, collar inverted and tacked to the inside and an oversized button sewn on to match his look.
The kimono and hakama are all handmade by the me. Machine-sewn and following a mishmash of patterns from various sources followed by guesswork. (He sometimes wears the split-legs hakama but this particular variant he wears the giant skirt version.)
The kimono is detailed with felt-tip of all things. I have a spare bit of the fabric COVERED in X's from various methods of detailing and grey felt tip came out the closest match. Who'd have thought it.
I know I screwed the collar up, I still can't get my head around the directions for it, but I will have to make another attempt at some point.
The hakama was fun to make, I've made a split-leg one before so this was a lot less painful and meandering, but the trouble is the pattern. He wears a kind of bamboo-coloured mix of dark brown/dark green/light brown stripes, and could I find anything remotely similar? No. I settled for a butcher-stripe blue/white effort, and had at it with olive green and light brown dyes. I got it to a somewhat fruity green/dark blue mix but that's all, given time remaining it would have to do.
The glasses are reading glasses from a local store, filed into the rough shape (how hard can it be to find oval rimless glasses I ask you?)
The sandals are a lucky find from a local shop in town, they had tacky rubber soles and meaningless kanji on them but some hacking and scraping took care of those. Naturally I knocked together some toesocks for them in all of thirty seconds.
The wig.. well. it sucks, I know it. I did all I could to style it but it didn't take and ended up looking like a bit of a mess. Bah.
I put together a faux attendance-record book, and a noose XD The noose is rough rope bought from B&Q and tied properly as a hangman's noose. However I then took a large pair of scissors to the loop, added hotglue and sticky velcro to create a safety-release noose. The velcro ended up being kinda weak so it would actually fall apart from even a slight movement but it held up well enough for photos and the like. I like the fact it wasn't going to kill me, personally. Plus, it meant it got OK'd by con-ops. A handy bonus.
It didn't get too much recognition, it's still too new a show, but I've done my part now ;)
Wearing reading glasses is WEIRD, but I do have newfound respect for them, I might end up using these when I'm doing fine detail stuff.
Plus, Akemi Solloway personally complimented me on hand making the outfit myself so yay!
