A good way to age things is to actually take a can of brown/dark red spray paint to them. You gently spray over it building up layers of scum until it gets dark enough. It also adds a nice layer of filth because it makes the fabric stiffer.

haha I've been doing almost the reverse. I've been blotching fake blood and dirt on and then spraying watered down bleach on it to take away the brightness of the colours so it dulls it down and gives it an old, rubbed in stain effect.
I didn't want to go too OTT with it so the distressing looked as natural as possible.

may add more blood spatters though using that technique with my airbrush!
I did that to the bottom of the dress to make it all dirty and stiff like you mentioned =]
