|When I first heard of Final Fantasy, it was when my brother borrowed a copy of FFVIII from a friend. I gave it a go, got Squall through the training areas, then got stuck when it came to the world map. Thus, I hated FF games for the fact that there wasn't enough explanation of what to do.|
Many years down the line, however, I'm shown a Final Fantasy fighting game by my friends, for the PSP. It looked very challenging, and was completely different to the game I had played before. Intrigued, I looked at the character list, and thought I'd look into this Zidane character as I'd seen people like Emzone cosplay as him.
I watched a playthrough of FFIX on YouTube, and found the story very fleshed out, even though if I was playing I would have got lost again. I enjoyed it so much I decided to buy Dissidia, and start playing. But which character to main? I knew Zidane was good, but after trying all the characters out I took a specific liking to Bartz's mixed style.
Thus I became a Bartz fan.
So, hearing of all the Dissidia groups popping up, I'm going to do my share and cosplay as my favorite character.
Events I will be wearing Bartz:
Kitacon II 2010 (if finished in time)
London Expo May 2010

Epiphany (Posted 31st May 2010)
Well, Expo was an eye-opener.
I took my Bartz costume to Expo, and found out I was not the only one. There were 2 other Bartz's, both of which looked a lot better than me. So I've come to the conclusion of upping my game before Amecon, and revamping all of my costumes by learning to use craft foam. This will be interesting...
Change of plan (Posted 23rd May 2010)
Don't worry, it's nothing serious - just ignore the post below this one. I CAN bring the Brave Blade after all, I just need to wrap it up. Other than that, the gloves and heaband are redone, and the trousers needed re-sewing but they're all good now too!
Also been playing Dissidia again to refresh my memory. I'm pretty much all ready except for finishing the sword!
Brave Blade not coming to Expo :( (Posted 18th May 2010)
Was just finishing off the shape for the Brave Blade, and realised one tiny thing - I'm going on the train to Expo, aren't I? D'oh!
So sadly I can't fit a sword onto the train, let alone get through security with it.
Oh well, more time to fix up the costume! Gloves and headband are still to be touched up...
Late Kitacon review (Posted 2nd April 2010)
It's been nearly a week and I haven't put a post about how Bartz got on at Kita! Shame on me!
Anyhews... I was going to wear Bartz through all of Saturday, but seeing the huge number of Final Fantasy cosplayers (particularly FFX) made me wanna wear it on Friday evening too. During the Saturday, I followed some FF cosplayers outside to find out they were doing a photoshoot, and I was invited in! ^_^ (pictures have been posted)
As for the costume itself - I was lucky I wore it early, cause I realised the shoulder pad wouldn't stay on, so it had to be strengthed with more sewing. When it fell apart at first, I replaced the shoulder pad with my Boko plushie temporarily. However, everyone loved the chocobo so much I had to switch it to the other shoulder when I fixed the pad. Not a worry, at least I won't have to carry Boko!
Before expo, I have a couple of things to touch up. I have to finish the sword, and possibly make a new headress/stars.
(Near enough) Finished! (Posted 3rd March 2010)
As per usual, I'm just about to finish the costume, when one of my shoddy works at sewing falls apart. Luckily it's only on the trousers when I was attaching the yellow fabric on, shouldn't take long to fix.
The Shoulder pad was a pain to make, as at first the ribbon was too long to stay on my shoulder. So I used the excess ribbon to attach the top of the shoulder pad, but it kept falling as I was trying to sew it on >:( It's all good now though.
Well lookie here (Posted 3rd March 2010)
While I was waiting for the paint to dry on my shoulderpad, I grabbed something to eat, had a little R and R, and MADE THE FREAKING STARS!
I am really pleased with how easy it was to make. It's a little floppy, but it's not going to fall apart any time soon!
Cape finished! (Posted 3rd March 2010)
Woohoo! Cape was easier than expected, but the top part needed a lot of work. Also needs bending into shape, as I've only just finished making it.
The next step is to make the shoulder pad, which will be a bird mask painted yellow, then attached to a ribbon to go round my arm. This might take a while.
Really Rolling now! (Posted 3rd March 2010)
Yay! Got the Belts on the top done! Now I have got to take on the tough part - the cape! But I love capes so much...
Getting in the mood for it (Posted 28th February 2010)
So, I am beginning now at last! While cutting the sleeves off my T-shirt, I found that they were perfect length to make gloves out of them! A few snips for finger holes, and a little sewing up to tighten, and they're all good! A little loose, but I would rather have that than go for cutting my blood supply off.
Also pretty chuffed with a setup I found for Bartz on Dissidia. I can keep Bartz in EX Mode for ages, and every time I hit with Goblin PAWNCH!, my EXP bonuses go into effect (I have Super Ribbon to stop them from breaking), which activates my EXP to BRV ability, which in turn gives me loads of Bravery for the next Goblin PAWNCH! Just got the Excalibur II, which also gives a +100% EXP boost.
Slow progress is slow. (Posted 27th February 2010)
So I have purchased the materials I need to make the costume so far, and it looks like I am getting somewhere with the costume. It is usually at this point I decide I am not going back on this costume, and I will start making bits and pieces within the next few weeks.
So long as work doesn't take up my time like it has done this week...
Oh yeah, nearly forgot - I have got the yellow stripe down the sides of the Brave Blade, but I am not finishing it until I have the hilt done.
Getting Started (Posted 8th February 2010)
Hokay, a lot of work to do here. Luckily one of my other costumes is finished, so I can get started.
Since I have the bits to do it, I am starting on the Brave Blade. I'm gonna be painting over a red bokan, and possibly making the hilt out of cardboard.
In what will be good news... (Posted 3rd January 2010)
In between the Xmas fun, I drew up a draft of the Bartz costume, the strategy guide for DFF and the character viewer helped with that. There is still a lot of work to be done, so now Xmas is out of the way I am gonna get serious with my costume making.
A pain in the neck (Posted 5th December 2009)
My internet connection has died at the moment, so I am rarely online. Anyways, I have been looking at Bartz in the museum on Dissidia, and it looks like this costume is gonna take longer than I expected. Should still have it done by May if I start early!
And for those who are wondering about my escapades on FFV, I have been busy playing thanks to losing the internet, and have completed the game! Spellblade-DualWield-Rapidfire is indeed a nasty combination, allowing a character to attack 8 times in a turn with one of the blades enchanted! Thanks to this, I managed to beat ExDeath in about 3 attempts.
Research... research... research... (Posted 23rd November 2009)
Progress so far is started, but I'm not seriously completing any cosplays until Christmas is out of the way (big family = lots of presents to buy).
In the meantime I have downloaded a GBA emulator with copies of FFI and II: Dawn of Souls (completed I btw, Chaos is a pain), and FFV (YAY for Bartz!). Going through so far, it's sad to hear what happened to Bartz's parents, and I've just met up with Galuf again.
