|*This costume is now retired from public events*|
Well seeing how my Resi 3 Jill was so popular and the (now ex) bf is a major Resi fan I thought it would be fun to cosplay her original S.T.A.R.S uniform. She's a lot more covered up in this outfit lol
A lot of my references for this costume came from the REmake and Umbrella Chronicles but this version is more similar to the original and Deadly Silence versions when you look at the hair and some of the materials/ colours I went with. I am now working on a new updated version though.
Jill Valentine is an intelligent solider and she does all she can to make sure her comrades will be safe. She has strong moral convictions and fights for what she believes in. Jill was reassigned from an out-of state S.T.A.R.S Unit to Raccoon City. Her exceptional skill in using mechanical devices from APCs to lockpicks make her an excellent team member. She is a talented young woman who is full of life but can be a bit too impulsive at times. Jill is usually fine under pressure.
Most of the supplies have come from good ole ebay including: S.T.A.R.S. patches, S.T.A.R.S. watch, beret, gloves, thigh holster, boots, combats and t-shirt.
Jill's hair is slighter shorter and longer on one side in Resi 3 so I got a new wig for this version. However I ordered the same brand and shade as my other one so the comparison between my Jill's looks natural =)I have realised that the side Jill parts her hair changes between my original version (not Umbrella Chronicles) of Resi 3 Jill and the Re-make of Resi one (which is where most of referencing for this costume comes from) -_- Why they decided to change her parting in the re-makes I don't know but I'm not buying a whole new wig for it.
The stitching on the S.T.A.R.S. patch on the beret is meant to be white but it looks more grey to me grrr so I've had to buy a mini beret patch to cover it up. Both patches I have altered using a navy blue fabric pen as the original blue was too bright for my liking.
Found some navy blue combats from a military shop on ebay that seemed suitable. Slightly baggy on the waist (I got the smallest size they stock) but wearing a belt has helped this. I will find a proper fitting pair another time.
I have found a grey-blue ribbed t-shirt on ebay which I wanted to add the front 2 seams to but just ran out of time. I sewed on the S.T.A.R.S. patch to the left shoulder and used a black fabric marker to add the S.T.A.R.S. lettering to the back of the t-shirt. I was originally going to use iron on letters but due to postal strikes they have been lost in a delivery office somewhere the past 3 weeks -_- The fabric pen doesn't look too bad I guess but I'm not very happy with how I placed the letters, I should of finished the shoulder pads first before doing this.
The thigh holster is a Viper drop leg holster which is popular brand for military/airsoft products. I have cut off one of the two thigh straps however as Jill only has one.
Jill's mag pouch (or that's what I assume it to be) has been an awkward find. Someone suggested using a digital camera case which seemed the easiest option except I couldn't find one anywhere the right style (remember I'm a picky arse). In the end after searching all my local shops and online I had to settle for one closest which was £19.99 >_< way too much for that little pouch but eh I need to be as accurate as possible and it was bugging me. I ripped out the metal Fujifilm logo tag on the front and I'm covering up the little hole with a strap and clasp (I've found one like Jill's on another bag, yes I will buy the bag just for the clasp...). The strap that holds the mag pouch I made from scratch using webbing and a strap buckle.
The boots are Mil-com patrol boots which are recommended for security and police work. These look a more accurate design than army boots as a different style.
I originally looked at Viper fingerless gloves but Jill's have a sorta "cuff" on them and these gloves ended short on the wrist. I found another airsoft brand of gloves which are slightly longer so should hopefully allow me to fit her watch on them. As these are mainly designed for men my poor little finger isn't long enough to show through the tops so I've had to trim them back a bit, they're a slightly bulky fit also.
You can get S.T.A.R.S. watches from cheap Chinese sellers on ebay but they all come with metal straps whereas Jill's is a brown leather. I still thought having a S.T.A.R.S. branded watch would be a nice touch though so I ordered one anyway and I managed to get the strap replaced at the market yay! The seller laughed as he took the watch from me, I think he might of recognised it XD Sad thing though is while the watch fits nicely on my wrist once you try and put on outside the glove the strap won't close >_< I shall have to keep it connected using string or something oopps. I'm really pleased with how it looks though =)
Shoulder pads. Oh how I hated the buggers. They were made out of 1 inch thick plain blue foam (the sort you use to stuff cushions and couches ect)which I shaped then covered with navy blue poly-cotton drill material. Mess and swearing with very stringy glue was involved during this. Then I glued on silver buttons for the studs on her pads and realised I had only brought 4 instead of the needed 8. This was the night before Expo so no time to go get some more, I wanted to cry lol But the buttons used on my Rinoa skirt and Kairi's bag are the same so I used those (Rinoa needs a new skirt anyway). Then I sewed the pads onto the harness which I had made earlier in the week. I put it together myself from scratch using webbing, strap buckles and like I did with Kairi I swiped some metal loops from a handbag strap again XD I don't see why I can't find these anywhere, I can only find "D rings" but I've seen these square ones on loads of bags!
This sounds pretty straight forward but it took a lot of trial and error, sewing things on the wrong way, having to adjust straps ect ect before I got it right. The shoulder pads and harness took about 7-8 hours alone. And I'm still not happy with them lol Oh well they'll do for a first attempt and I'll make a new set another day.
I wanted a S.T.A.R.S. messenger bag but everywhere was sold out T_T
I first wore this to the London MCM Expo in October 2009. I wore it both days of the Expo so it got seen by a lot of people and in general had a great response, a few told me I was the best Jill they had seen yay ^-^ I took part in the masquerade with my (now ex) bf RisingPheonix as Chris Redfield (Code Veronica X version) and we gave a little bit of fan-service with a smooch on stage which we got a huge cheer for XD I tend to be iffy about fan-service but a lot of people view Chris and Jill as a cannon pairing and we did it in a cute way, not overly sexual like some cosplayers 0.o
I saw a few people with the S.T.A.R.S. bag, I wanted to steal them >.>
This costume had a good response but I'm not happy with a few details and I'm planning on re-making the whole thing so it looks closer to the REmake and Umbrella Chronicles versions.
