|Man of bling! |
The first moment I was introduced to Hyung Tae Kim's artwork I fell in love with the design of Calintz, but I didn't get around to making him till years later. By then I'd managed to play some of the game (with a very badly written english walkthrough :P) and actually grew to like his character as well. One of the main reasons why it took me ages to get around to making this was actually the jewellery - I wanted to mimick the artwork version of him, not the game, where all his main jewellery is gun-metal, rather than silver. Everytime I went shopping I looked for something to use for his necklaces. When I eventually found something (a huuuuge wallet chain with three different sized chains, win!) I decided I'd make him, and hearing that Angelphie was making Adora? It just sealed the deal.
Most of the time spent on this costume was procrastination, as its actually pretty simple. I took the pattern from my previous Calintz (Tears of Blood/ferret-boy) top, and used a dressing gown to work out the jacket pattern. I spent ages trying to work out how on earth I was going to do the designs on his sleeve and glove, and then Angelphie introduced me to the wonder that was iron-on transfers! Although I panicked while putting them on (if it went wrong, a whole jacket ruined >.<) they worked really well, and I can highly recommend using them for costumes where there is a complicated logo!
The glove..hand...flap logo thing was done in the same way, and the glove was one I used for Yuffie years back, with bias binding around the fingers to recreate the silver bands. (You cant quite tell if its supposed to be rings or not) The ass-skirt was the part I left till last, and it showed! I ended up chickening out of the proper design and drawing a simple chinese dragon, although most of the complicated bits I did are hidden by the jacket, bah! The fastenings on the top are actually hair bands sewn together, as I couldn't find any proper fastenings that look like his. For the rest of the jewellery, I copped out and raided my own supply.
The wig was from my first Calintz costume, with the pony tail hacked off. For later wearings I managed to get it flattened down a little, but mostly it was quite fluffy XD The shoes I managed to order off ebay (and now wear them around the house, as they are so comfy) and the tabi were just normal socks I modified.
I have a slight war with this costume, as I spent ages doing his nails (he's such a ponce) and when the con came round, I coudn't get the glue to work. Finally, on the third attempt of wearing this costume, I managed to actually wear the whole thing ;)
This is also the first costume I actually managed to get decent photos of! Princess Mark took tons of awesome photos, and made us do some cool poses. Unfortunately I'm laughing in most of them XD (Hey, its hard work being angsty 24/7, I have to give these traumatised main characters credit!)
