|Time Taken :||10 hours or so|
|Hitachiin, Frazzy and I wanted to cosplay from Gintama when we were in Japan this summer, but since we were foolishly going during tsuyu (the very warm, very rainy season), it was going to be scorching and humid. So Hitachiin wearing Gin's normal kimono (which she nearly died in last AmeCon) was out of the question. Eventually we found these outfits, which are more acceptable for summer, and decided to make them!|
I made the costume in about a day or two since it was very simple. It was my first time using piping in a costume which luckily was very simple and didn't give me much hassle despite not having a piping foot for my machine. I bought a pack of pre-made piping from ebay since I was low on time and it was cheaper than buying a piping foot, string and material separately. I couldn't find yellow buttons I liked so I used self-covering buttons with some scrap yellow fabric I had. I made the yellow closures with just a bit of yellow cord tied at the correct length to look right- elastic would pull th shirt together inappropriately.
Once in Japan, I bought a sun hat and some red ribbon to make the hats, and I bought a kabutomushi cage and some bug nets from Ito-Yokado. I made the pigtails for the wig from stealing a weft from hitachiin's Kamui wig (Kagura's brother; we dyed their wigs at the same time so they were identical) and stitching them into the back of my current Kagura wig (and removing the hair bun from the top). I reused the purple umbrella that I made for my Yoshiwara Kagura costume, too.
We finally ended up wearing these costumes to the Kawasaki cosplay event on June 13th 2009.
Unfortunate things about this costume are; my parents say I look like a bell-hop or a member of the circus when I wear it, and the cotton creases REALLY easily.
